Me and my dad headed up to Dalhart Monday for 3 days of chasing speed goats. This was our first time to hunt them. We left at 4am and drove the 11 hrs up to Dalhart. We elected to stay at the Rita Blanca Lake Park instead of with the guides or in a hotel. Man I'm glad we did. Had the whole place to ourselves and it was beautiful. We got in at about 3:15 and had plenty of time to get out for an evening hunt. Saw a couple groups right off the bat. Finally found a group with a decent buck. My dad was first up so they set out. No sooner had hey started walking with the decoy than the group took off. We were able to circle around and get a pivot between us and them. My dad and his guide hit the tall grass in a belly crawl to make it up to a wheel. Right before they got to the wheel the group ran again. (The guide kept sitting up to range them and kept getting pegged. He should have waited until they got all the way to the wheel). Me and my guide were still at the truck so we took off to try to push the group back to my dad. Well of course they let us get around them. Get out of the truck and walk up to about 120yds. I didn't take my gun because I never thought they would stay there. I figured they would take off as soon as we got out of the truck. They finally ran again but the wrong way. We picked up my dad and swung around the group again. We finally intercepted them on s road and they stopped long enough to give my dad a 200yd shot. He went down when we heard the bullet hit. Drove up there and somehow he hit him right through the pelvis. Broke both legs and he couldn't move at all. Not a good shot but he was down and didn't suffer long. Put a 9mm in the heart and he was done.

Yesterday we got up and started hunting right after light. Found a few groups from the day before with no shooters. We drove around all morning until about 3:30 until we decide to head back to the camp to come up with a game plan and see about other ranches to hunt. About 5 minutes from the house we spotted a nice buck with some does. They were right next to one filed we knew we had access to but we just weren't 100% positive we had the field they were in. The guide called the owner and asked if we had the field hey we're in. It was an affirmative! As soon as I heard the owner on the other line say "shoot him!" I was bailing out. The road bed we were on was lower than the field so I was able to get to the field edge he over the bank and set up with the BogPod and see right over the grass. They were about 250 out there. I was trying to wait until he got out from in front of some does before I shot and all of a sudden they all started running out and to my left. Just when I thought they were gonna be gone my guide stood up and they stopped and looked. That was all I needed. I was ready when the buck stopped. I knew they were further than they had been but didn't know how far. I put my 250 bdc on the top of his shoulder and fired. I saw him drop then heard that beautiful impact sound. He was down!! We paced it off and we came up with him being between 320 and 350. Longest hunting shot I have ever taken. I was completely comfortable with it. I had practiced all summer, dry firing and shooting rounds. It definitely paid off. Bullet went in the shoulder joint, destroyed both shoulders and the heart. Best shot of my life!
We were both shooting Win Model 70's in 270. Dad shot 150gr CorLokt
I shot 130gr CorLokt
