    Texan of the week....

    Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas

Southeast Texas is starting the task of rebuilding from Hurricane Ike. One of the hardest hit areas was the Island city of Galveston. Damage was unbeliveable, and through it all mayor Lyda Ann Thomas has been a calming force. Thomas and other city officials, along with police and fire and hundreds of volunteers have been pouring their hearts into the clean up effort. This week we honor Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas.

Isn't this the same lady that told those same people they had nothing to worry about and they didn't need to evacuate?

The way I understood it, she didn't make evacuation mandatory until much later than it should have been. Making statements before she made it mandatory that it wasn't necessary, wasn't going to be too bad, etc. Maybe I was misinformed.

But i do not belive galveston Island was the hardest hit. Try Bolivar Pennisula. I been to both areas and i have to say the drive to my parents house in bolivar was like going thru a ghost town. Most of the houses and landmarks from High Island to Port Bolivar are gone. There are parts where the gulf is only a 100 yards or so from HWY 87

Charlie they are doing fine. They went an got an apartment in Texas City for right now. They had about a foot of water in the house(floor is 14 ft up). The only damage was where the back wall meet the floor was riped out. Most of the thing are recoverable, except a couple of beds couches and clothes. There are going to repair there house and sale or rent it out. If you go 10 miles to the east of them it bad. Lots of friends i grew up with lost thier house. Parents got lucky. But it will be years IMO before it comes back. Everthing has to be redone.

            Thanks for asking.

No, she told them to evacuate or risk death. Pretty clear to me, late or not.

She started with voluntary and upgraded when Ike turned north from the Corpus hit they first predicted. Sorry for those at Bolivar and on. It was a bad storm for sure.

She absolutely did say there was no reason to evacuate, but that was on Wednesday. On Thursday she changed her tune.

That is a no win situation to have to make that call.

If you make it and the storm doesn't come then you are an idiot that just wasted everyones time and money.

If you wait and make the call at the last minute then you are risking the lives and property of the people whom vote you into office in the first place!

She appears to be doing a good job of handling an impossible situation.

I think you are referring to Ray Nagin

No. She's the one who told them if you stay you will die.

Sorry if I offended anyone... Refering to my second post, I guess I misunderstood the situation.
