    Opener fun

The Monday before opener I went out to the family ranch to set up a bucket feeder, check cameras, sight in rifles, etc. I put the bucket feeder on the front portion of the property (total ranch is @100 acres) to add another hunting spot since we mainly hunt the back with a barrel feeder from a ladder stand during bow (@25yrds) and a box blind during rifle (@130yrds). Friday me and the family got out there and I unloaded everything at my in laws place, about a mile away, and hurried over for last light to due some scouting and pull the camera cards. There were some deer by the front feeder, so I passed it up to check the back camera. Snagged the data on my computer and went back towards the front setup anticipating the deer to still be hanging out. Nope, two pigs were under the bucket just chomping away. Lucky for me I had remembered the good ol' 30-30 and had it riding beside. I was probably 100 yards away and they weren't paying any attention so I decided to grab my shooting stick and make a steady shot. I was just grabbing it from the bed of the truck when the feeder went off and those 2 pigs squealed and took off running right for me! I shouldered the Marlin and was waiting for them to stop, slow down, turn, something when they darted into a wooded point 30 yards in front of me. I waited for them to come out and cross the pipeline to my right. Number one was scooting and made the other side, but the second one wasn't so lucky. The Marlin barked and the piggy was down. I hit him high around mid back and that was it. I pulled the card and it was the only time we have had any pigs on camera in daylight. (Plenty at night!)

Good start for my weekend. Ended up with the one pig and a cull buck.

Here they are on camera right before and after.

You bet! I like the lever guns for stalking and off hand shots and the 30-30 packs a punch under 100 yards.
