    Old gas weedeater help needed

    Friends-

I have an old gas-powered weedeater. It's about 15 years old and hasn't been used in 8 or 9 years. I'd like to get it running again. It's just been sitting in a shed. Is there anything I need to do before filling it with gas and trying to start it?

    Thank you.

I would change the oil and you could change the spark plug just to make sure its getting good spark. Other than that, fire it up

      Clean air filter
Maybe squirt the carb with carb cleaner
Check fuel lines make sure they're good

I have worked on hundreds of trimmers
        You should
        1. Replace fuel lines
        2. Rebuild carb
        3. New fuel filter ( likely in the tank )

        What brand trimmer is it?

Depends on if it still had gas in it when you "parked" it

I would plan on what flywise suggested and go from there

This is the steps I took, and worked like a champ.

I went with a new carburetor, and plan to rebuild the old one. I'll keep it as a backup.

Carbs are pretty easy to rebuild once you get the right kit.
Fuel lines are tricky on some brands but well worth replacing on one that has sat any significant time ( with or with out fuel)
But in the end, it will likely run very well and worth the few bucks it takes.

I would bet that the carb is gunked up pretty bad. New gas. New filters(air and fuel if it has one) new spark plug.

I just did all this and put a new bulb and a new air filter on to an echo that hadn't been started in 8 yrs. cost me about $60 to get it running

Can't tell you what to do to get it running but, if you clean and pull and clean and pull for hours DO NOT beat it on the driveway, if you feel like you may be heading this direction just go ahead and shell out the bucks for a replacement, trust me your blood pressure will thank you!

Make sure you get a small engine fuel additive for the fuel once you get it running. Modern fuel has too much ethanol in it and will destroy small engines.

Do all the above and rest your arm tonight, just in case.
