Great news Tony. He's a tough guy it sounds like. I'm sure being fit contributed to a best-case outcome, and clearly God has more in store for his life. Steve, thanks for the play by play.

Also, sounds like the strap manufacturer needs to be held accountable if he just bought the thing and it broke. Man, ya just never know these days.

Just another reason to take care of yourself on a daily basis - you never know what is going to happen and having your body prepared for the worse never hurts. I promise you if his body was not in shape from squatting/jumping ect.ect. the outcome would have been MUCH worse. Glad to hear that he is ok, but sorry to hear about the accident

He is one tough fella. Probably the only guy I know that could take that fall landing on his feet with out breaking any bones

Thanks so much everyone. If anything I want this to be a learning experience for everyone else. I got extremely lucky, hands down. I'm not a reckless guy either. I double and triple check my stands. I always wear a harness no matter what when I hunt but have always hung my ladders and stands without one.

I had already a ladder and stand hung there but it being a really good spot I bought a new more comfortable, bigger stand. I hung it with 2 new ratchet straps, checked it. Tested it out. Everything was great, adjusted the straps so they weren't binding at all. Climbed down grabbed my seat, easy hanger and an extra hanger. I climbed up set the seat. Spent about 2 minutes standing figuring out the proper position on the hanger. Turned around with my back to the tree and was rotating to the right when the top strap broke. Like a trap door I plummeted straight down. I attempted to grab a branch on the way down to no avail. I was really lucky to land on my feet and roll forward. My lower leg exploded in pain. It was my calf tearing that caused so much. It took me about 40 yards of crawling towards my truck before I could get my feet under me. I've done this literally hundred of times before, it was eye opening and sobering to be so close to such a dangerous situation.

On a different note. Like Codie said. Crossfit without a doubt saved my life in this situation. Had I not trained the way I do, landing on my feet from that distance and only being injured marginally is proof that it helps prepare you for real life situations in the BEST way possible.

Please be safe everyone. I'll never climb again without a linemen rope and my harness on when hanging them
