    Rv a/c / generator help?

I have an 8000 starting what 6000 running watt Troy built generator. When the AC compressor engages it causes the generator breaker to trip. When first started the generator will run the AC for a while and then it trips. The generator runs everything else just fine microwave lights etc. Please help.

If your A/C is running properly you should only be pulling about 15 amps Max for a larger 15K BTU system. Now start up will have a heavy surge but only for a second.

What amperage is your outlet on your generator

I would check and make sure everything else is turned off and try it again. If your fridge is on, it pulls about 3 amps, converter pulls about 5 amps, electric water heater pulls over 10 amps. Make sure everything is off.

Also, do the A/C run fine when it is plugged into shore power

I haven't tried it at a camp ground. I plugged it into a. 20 plug at home and it caused it to trip.

It sounds like maybe you have something else on or your A/C is pulling to many Amps

You need to check start up and running amp draw. Could be a weak capacitor causing it to pull more amps.

I just had the same issue.

RV place hooked it up to shore power and both A/C's worked fine. He diagnosed it as the power inverter going bad.

Haven't hooked it up to generator power yet but I hope that was it,

The a/c does not run thru an inverter (or the trailer's converter). They are direct wired to shore power (thru a breaker, of course).

If the compressor never starts, you probaly need a new start/run capacitor. Just buy a hard start kit and plug it in. If that cures it, you'll be good to go.

If the compressor actually spools up and runs for a while before the breaker trips, the compressor is probably going out.

That's what happens. Sounds like a new unit is in my future.

Can just the compressor be replaced?

Yes, if you can find an appliance repair guy willing to do it. Those little units weren't made to be serviceable. If you do find a guy willing to do it, he probably won't want to warranty the work.

You'd probably be better off just replacing it. I'd definately have a pro look it over before replacing it!

Hope it turns out to be something easy. If you need a new unit, check PPL in Houston. http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/r...nditioning.htm
