    Hunter's Ed online course

My wife recently completed the online course for her Hunter's Ed. I was going to get my brother to do it, but the state requires a field portion for anyone under 17, so we held off on him. I know that some folks have either thought about doing this or are wondering an easy way to get it done, so here is a quick breakdown of our experience:

    1) it was extremely easy to find the online course via TPWD's website; just click the hunter's Ed tab and select the online course

    2) registration was a breeze. Basically the same thing you fill out when you pay for something online

    3) the options for the course we're relatively cheap. We picked the last option listed, which ended up being $15

    4) the course was very thorough (if you took the time to read every screen); there were quizzes at the end of each of the ten sections to test your knowledge before taking the final exam

    5) the final exam wasn't all that difficult. There were a couple of regs that were about specific things, but they were not hard to answer given the choices

    6) overall, the course took about 1.5 hrs and was extremely user-friendly

I highly recommend that anyone getting their wives or older kids into hunting to have them go ahead and take this online course. The cost is only $5 more than the one year deferment, so it just makes sense to get it out of the way. Hope I gave useful info here for anyone with questions.

I did the same thing with my feance. She had never hunted before or even fired a gun until we were dating for about 3 years. Now she loves it, wants to shoot her first buck this year (shot a doe late last year). She likes for me to explain things to her about hunting and the laws. Its a lot like when my son asking the why question to every answer you give him, but not as annoying. So I told her she should take the test for her hunter education like I did when I was in high school. Like you said the online class is very user-friendly, cheap and full of all kinds of knowledge that I may have passed up in my explaining to her (like the differences in shotgun chokes, lol). She is about half way though it and may finish it up today. She has be quizzing me about the things she has learned already, I guess to see if I still know it. I would recommend it to anybody, my dad even said he would like to take the class, thinks he might learn a thing or two.

Thank you for this post. I was actually going to post today to find out about the online option for my 15 year old, with the field day. I was looking at this option last night because my son didn't want to spend a nine hour day doing the whole course at once.

I looked a couple of field days coming up next month for my son.

Even though it isn't required for me, I may do it myself this weekend.

It says on the TPWD site that it's four hours.

Just make sure you can find a field day. When my son took the class room course, there were several kids that took the online part, but still had to sit through the whole thing, because they could not find a 4 hour field day. The classroom course was not bad.

You have plenty of time. Definitely worth the 1-2 hrs in front of a computer. My wife is ready to go sit on her own and try for a bow kill.
