    Question for the cattle expert

I have a small herd of cattle. 1 Bull, 6 cows and 2 steers. The bull has all my cows bred and have been for the past 6 to 7 months. My neighbor has some young heifers and my bull has gone thru the fence a couple of times to be with them. He is a nice guy and I have put the whole herd in a different pasture for now so he can't get back over there.

My neighbor says I should get rid of the bull because once a bull does that he will always do that.

I was under the impression that every bull will do that and if he wants across the fence because of a neighboring cow in heat he is going to go thru it or over it to get to her.

I don't mind selling this bull and getting a different one but is it going to solve anything?

    Thanks

Yes once they start it's hard to keep them home. Especially when they have all of their cows bred and get bored. But doesn't mean you have to sell him but he could become a headache. How old is he?

Yes, that bull will always do that from now on.

Some bulls won't cross fences. If he has learned he can jump or get across fences he will continue doing it. When love calls guys don't always make good choices.

You really need more cows to keep a bull in his home pasture

I have one strand of hot wire up next to the 5 strand barbed wire but to tell the truth I don't like leaving it on because that is where my deer come from and thing it deters them from coming on to my property. I think i had rather sell the bull than keep the hot wire on and keep the deer out. Am I crazy?

Unless that new pasture is a long way off he won't stop. So yes sell it. We had a deal with one of our neighbors that only had a few cows, would let our bull service his cows and we got one bull calf if he had any. Everyone was happy.

If your bull is one of them Power Plus Angus bulls then your neighbor should be happy with the free service.
