Isn't it really just the slime on them that gets inside when the barb opens you up? Had a dr tell me that once and said some people are affected and some aren't. I've been pricked and it hurts, but never had any ill effects

I don't think its poison, I think it's the bacteria in the slime on the hard head. My little brother broke off a hardhead fin in his big toe after stepping on one. It flared up but he was ok. Took several hours to get to a doctor

Reminds me of my two cousins when we were fishing. One cousin caught a croaker and he flung it at the other while wade fishing. So in retaliation the other flung a hard head and it stuck it his back. It cracked us up to see a fish flapping around on his back. It was yanked out right away and he was fine. Same cousin stepped on one and was fine. I didn't know they could make you sick. I got stuck in my ankle once and it itched and hurt but nothing really bad.
Will fresh water cats have the same poison?
