    Fair Split?

My FIL and I are sharing a lease where we get:

1 Trophy (10 pts or better)
2 Cull/Management bucks (up to hunter)
    3 does
    =6 deer total

We split the cost 50/50. He has two younger boys.

I am wandering how the G/S would split who gets to kill what.

I would say the person who gets the trophy gets one less deer than the other person.

I'd say he gets 2 culls, 1 doe. You get the trophy ad 2 doe and could switch that every year if wanted.

You get 1 trophy and 1 doe, he gets the rest. Next year switch.

This is a no win situation really. How bad do you want a trophy? How bad does your FIL want a trophy?

Then I still say that would be the fair split if it's a 1 year deal

the issue with determining who gets the trophy is what if the other guy sees him and the guy who SHOULD shoot him doesnt'...

I think you look at pictures pic some trophy deer, first one to kill the trophy is done with bucks, they get one other doe, other guy gets the rest..

1 package gets the trophy and 2 does. The other gets 2 culls and a doe. Either flip a coin or rock, paper, scissors. 2 out of 3 wins their choice.

Or just kick your FiL in the taint and keep em all to yourself

Also depends on the reason you're hunting.

Honestly, and this may be unpopular, I think it's a little unfair to bring two youth hunters into what amounts to a 'business deal,' relative to the specifics of how a lease is split. If your FIL is garnering any 'meat' or anything off of the youth kills, then you're in a tight spot.

Like I said - maybe not popular, but nonetheless true. I'm not saying he's running you on this deal, I'm just saying the parameters of the deal kind of huff.

I think saying who gets the trophy ahead of time is setting up a situation for a bad memory, for the person who see the absolute monster first, and then can't shoot it.

Decide what the split is, and then the first person to get his sights on the big buck, shoots it and then the other person gets the other part of the split, which should be more generous on the amount, say the 2 cull bucks and and 2 does.

This might not work if someone starts shooting culls and does before getting the big buck, so if someone shoots the culls first, they disqualify themselves from the trophy buck.

Not a perfect deal, but dang if if want to preclude myself from shooting a monster buck because of trying to split a bag limit.

On the other hand, If I was in the deal, I would just take the trophy buck, and let them have the rest, and hopefully they would throw a backstrap my way.

EDIT: I apparently can't type fast enough for BOSS BUCK! Great minds think alike.

Give the trophy to the old man. You likely have a lot more good hunting years in front of you then he does...

If he has two younger boys who plan on hunting, he should take the two culls so they can both shoot a buck. Leaving you the trophy.
