I freeze my drinking water bottles and put them in the ice chest with the drinks. Then throw a bag or two of ice in the chest to fill in the open areas.

If you have a deep freeze that cools to absolute zero, it must be a dandy.

Point is, ice stored in a deep freeze is not going to last longer than ice stored in the freezer section of your refrigerator, which should normally be set at 0°F.

Ice from a true deep freezer will last longer than ice from a fridge freezer. My deep freeze goes to -20F vs 0F for a normal fridge freezer.

I think the point is it takes longer to melt a 1 gal block of ice vs a bag of ice cubes. I have done the same thing. Fozen milk jugs take a long time to thaw.

Not that into the coolers because we all know what the best is (Yeti) but that is one Great Elk, Congrats.

Best ice I ever used in a cooler was some glacier ice we picked up while we were camping in Alaska. Since I don't have ready access to a glacier, I freeze gallon and half gallon milk jugs and fill in any empty spaces in the cooler with crushed ice.

I have heard that as well.

Yep always love the milk jugs, they work great. My neighbor sells ice for snowcone machines. One solid block with no air, has a special freezing machine. I'll buy a few blocks from her, last 5 times longer than the block ice from store.

My dad always used(s) block ice for his coolers. I do as well and will continue to until I die.

I use half gallon jugs and water bottles frozen in the deep freeze. Some of them i will add salt, but as stated above you have to make sure not to overdo it or risk freezing contents of the cooler.

I know for a fact my deep freeze is colder than the fridge freezer. I have had bottles of salted ice which would solidify only in the deep freeze. At one time i had a table of melting point as a function of salt content to guide me.

Also like to keep the freezer full of these frozen bottles to help it run more efficiently, put less strain on it (last longer), will keep contents frozen longer in event of power outage, and can use the unsalted ones for drinking water in event of disruption of water supply. Also, always have ice on hand when needed for a cooler.

Lot of people just throw ice from the store in the cooler and wonder y it don't last that ice isn't completely froze that's just dropped from a ice maker and sits in a container till it's bagged or melts. Buy your I've a couple of days before and throw it in your deep freezer and you'll notice it will last twice as long

I freeze water in large cool whil and (fake) butter containers.

Makes a nice thick chunk of ice I can easily get out of the container (by running water over it) then Refill And reuse over and over again.

I line the bottom of the cooler with these and they are usually still there, in a smaller form, by the end of a trip.

I tried adding salt a few trips back and blew up a bunch of canned drinks, live and learn.

Who sez working with ice chests isn't hazardous duty? Dave you proved it's truly a Man's world!

Been lining ice chests with frozen water jugs for years and years. A layer of the 16 ounce frozen bottles on the bottom, make a nice elevation medium to raise your goodies up out of the water too! And the best thing about that is.....by the time you want to roll home, you have a few half thawed bottles ready to guzzle for the roll!

I stick 4 16 OUNCE frozen water bottles into my cooler the night before, just to prep the inside down to super cool temps. Those bottles get pulled and replaced with solid frozen bottles as the base, during cooler fill up and roll mode.
