Need advice on buying our first FFA show pig.

My older daughter at the age of 15 decided she wants to show a pig this year. We have never done this before. Im leaning on TBH for advice on where to find a best bang for the buck pig. I dont care to buy a $700 pig nor do I want to invest in a pig thats gonna be junk. From what Im being told a $300-$400 pig can be pretty good.

Anyone have any leads on show pig sellers that are honest? I don't mind driving a ways to get one if its gonna be a good deal.

We've got a lot to learn but were all ears so any advice will be appreciated.

I raised show pigs for 5 years. Can be fun and heartbreaking. The more time you spend with the pig the easier it will be to show. I had one so tame we use to tie a tire behind it for excersize, but the down part it they become pets when sell time/slaughter time comes. There's a vet in Nome TX named Rusty Hall if you call him he can probably tell you where in your area to buy a good pig. He use to buy pigs for people and travel up to Illinois even. Also he will tell you what feed to buy, it can get expensive very quick. But shaving a pig can be fun lol. Buy a sow, bar hogs can get fat easy.

Ronnie Gerth in seguin. Bought at least a dozen pigs from him throughout 4h and FFA. Most ever was 400 and I won the state fair OPB class show. Had some great luck with all the animals I bought there. It's a fun thing to do and can teach a kid a lot. I def learned any things. Pm me if you need any info or tips on things to do or use. Wish I could still do it today.

You can get a good pig for under 400.00. The key is what you do with the pig after you have it. You have to learn what to feed, how much to feed, when to bath, walk everyday, etc. it is allot of work, but the pig makes up about 50% of the success. Make sure you weigh the pig weekly so that you can manage what you are feeding each week. I found that I wanted the pig gaining good weight all the way up to the show vs. having to cut the feed so that they can make weight.
