    High Efficiency Wood Burning Fireplaces?

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience's with any of the new type 'wood burning' fireplaces that is advertised as efficient? I am only referencing wood burning and not the pellets etc. thanks in advance for your thoughts!!

We had a Earth Stove fireplace insert, a big model, and it would burn for hours and hours on a few logs. It had the fans and could heat our 1500sqft house without trouble. It'd burn ya out of the living room with the fans on.

Virginia soapstone stoves are the real deal. Colorado under 20 degrees in 1500 ft house and had to crack door it was so warm

The few people I know that have them like them but don't think they work well either at making heat or being efficient. Fire places tend to be not very efficient as there is no air control to the fire. Air tight wood stoves tend to be the most efficient, over 90%. We have heated our house the 35 years we've been married with a Fisher wood stove and ceiling fans. The only time we turn the central heat on is when having family crowds as I worry about people not used to a stove getting burnt.

The only way would be an insert. Good luck finding one that looks good.

Fireplaces are for looks andactually suck heat out of a house so you are on the right track. Years ago I saw an insert that had a draft pulling air from outside of the home. It had some good efficiency numbers but I didn't want to spend what it cost at the time. Maybe do a search on exterior draft fireplace inserts and see what is available. The EPA is really messing with wood heat equipment suppliers and your options may be gone by now.

Yes the old traditional fireplaces are non efficient for sure. Thanks for the information above.

I've done alot of research over the last several years and I have a Hearthstone hearthmount wood stove saved to my favorites. It mounts directly on the hearth and replaces the current fireplace that I have. I really like everything about them but can't make myself pull the trigger on the $3500 turn key job.
