things you remember from your past. .

I was born before jfk was murdered but not by much. I was born in the 2nd month and he was murdered in the 11th.

I remember the Vietnam War when I was a child and remember watching the news at night. Scared me as a child, I figured I might have to go there.

I remember the gas wars in the 70's

I remember the blue laws also.

What have ya'll seen? Times imo were better then.

I remember my brother and his friends checking their draft numbers.
I remember working on a farm, hoeing cotton, and drinking water from a mason jar we buried in the dirt at the end of the turn row to keep it cool enough to drink while we hoed that cotton.
I remember my mom, maw maw, and aunts giving each other Toni perms and smelling up the house, I remember butchering hogs and making cracklins outside, picking up fresh eggs from the chicken houses, hunting deer with dogs, carrying buck shot and fine shot hunting in the swamps so I could shoot whatever walked out that was eatable, duct taping garbage bags under my hunting pants and over my long johns because we were too poor to afford waders or hip boots, all the cooks at the hunting camps were men and you did not touch their pots, pans, utensils, or food unless asked to do so. And that was a privilege. I remember carrying my oldest son Rajun Cajun across slews and swamps on my back due to the water being over his boots. I remember skipping school the day before squirrel season to camp and prepare an early squirrel dinner

I remember the sound of my daddy's beagles chasing swamp rabbits through the bottoms and my cousin's fighting over who had the best deer dogs.

This always brings tears to my eyes. To hear those hounds and beagles one more time would make me so happy. Hunting has never been the same.

I remember watching the news with live shots of Desert Shield and Desert Storm every night. The way the missles looked zipping in the air with the green glow, from the night vision. Shock in aw. Very surreal and scary for a high school kid to watch, not knowing what tomarrow was going to bring. God bless the Vets

I remember my old man beating the crap out of me for doing something wrong. It worked and was worth it.

I was in kindergarten when the principal came over the loud speaker to announce that the president had been shot and then, a few minutes later, that he was dead. I remember my mother weeping about his death. I remember seeing LBJ on TV and making faces at him...then freaking out because I was pretty sure he could see me too. I remember nightly news coverage of the Vietnam war but it was a million miles away and I did not really understanding why they were fighting. Space launches were a big deal. I remember standing in line for a long time to peer into window of one of the Mercury capsules that was traveling around the United States. I remember watching live as Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon. I remember my mother and father declaring that there would never be a Beatles record in our home (pop culture won out - We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper was my first Beatles 45). I remember my grandmother describing the first hippies she had seen and how disgusting they were with their long hair and that she was certain they had bugs. I remember being sick and tired of Watergate as it dragged on and on. I remember my first serious girlfriend and how it felt like I had been electrified when she touched my arm. I don't remember my first few days of Navy boot camp. I remember tracking Soviet subs all over the Pacific and Indian oceans and how the guys on my crew (VP-47, crew 5) became closer than family. I remember seeing some Russian soldiers and knowing, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they were my enemy. I remember sitting in a ready room in the middle of the Indian Ocean seething with impotent fury, knowing the Carter would not do anything, as Iranian students took over our embassy. I remember flying missions straight inbound at the coast of Iran hoping they would attack to give us a reason to unleash the wrath of the United States on them. I remember not believing what the press was reporting about the botched hostage rescue attempt. I remember sitting and watching music videos on a new TV channel called MTV. I remember having one of my crew tell me about Reagan getting shot. I remember being jealous of my Navy buddies who were still on active duty during Desert Storm. I remember the Challenger disaster. I remember trying to comfort my students on 9/11. I remember finding debris from the Columbia on my in-laws land. Lots of memories.

I remember not as much as I should but, right now the best two days I can remember is when my children were born and I have never been the same since then. And yes I am thankful.

Hunting with my Dad and brother in the late 50's and early 60's. Way before corn feeders and blinds. Hunted in an old 3 speed army jeep. If you were lucky you might see two or three deer per day. Your stand was on the ground or sitting in the fork of a tree watching a clearing or game trail!

I remember coming home from elementary school to find my mom crying....Reagan had been shot and was in surgery.
I was on a bench press in 7th grade athletics when Coach Dursam told us that the space shuttle Columbia blew up on launch.
I remember our satellite out back....it was 8' in diameter and looked like it could land the space shuttle. We could get the Playboy channel, before it was pay per view.
I remember watching things like The World Amatuer Foosball Championships at 2:00am on a little known sports channel called ESPN.
I remember buying Skoal when I was 13 and nobody asked for an id. I dipped everyday, left cans laying on my dresser and my parents never cared one way or the other. Either times were different or my parents didn't love me much.
I remember when there was a difference between the girls you dated and the girls you married, and you could tell the difference by the way they talked, dressed and ate ice cream cones.

I remember being in fourth grade and taking a math retest when they came over the loudspeaker about the challenger blowing up. That's the first real news event I think I processed.

I remember watching the cardinals and brewers play in the world series and pretending to play along. I was a big cardinals fan because my grandfather in Arkansas was a big fan.

There are so many things, some I wish I had written down because grandpa passed before I knew what a tape recorder was much less a video, some things things I'll never forget and I don't know why, but seeing one of my friends after lunch break from school sitting on the front steps of with tears in his eyes because of his draft number has stuck with me, children, friends and relatives coming and passing, all the fun and sadness of growing up and getting older, I think I'll just go sit on the porch for some R&R (rock and remember).
On a brighter note I also remember when cars and trucks had painted metal interiors and a/c was an expensive option.

I remember nuke drills in elementary school during the Cuban missile crisis. Line up in the hall against the block wall and curl up on your knees in the fetal position. At that time San Antonio was way up the Russians nuke hit list.

I remember laying on the floor 18 inches from the tv and changing channels.
I remember life was a lot slower just a few years ago.
