    Still to close to call

Had a high narrow 8 pt taunt me all last year. No matter what angle he was, I just couldn't get 13" out of him. I was hoping the few people who hunt around me, along with the poachers, would leave him alone to see what he'll turn out to be this year. Well I got my first pic of him and he grew some inches up, but not out He still has me guessing.
    Here he is this year

I don't think he'll do it, even this year. I have to wonder if hunters are selecting the wider antlered deer and leaving these narrow ones, leaving us with only narrow antlered deer. Sorta that whole natural selection deal in select locations.

Beautiful deer, but don't think he's going to make 13.

No. The whole purpose of AR is to give the deer time to mature. That also gives those 13" deer adequate time to breed & further their traits.

That's a great looking buck. Wish the state would allow a defense to prosecution, if the deer is aged by a state biologist and determined to be 4+ years, no fine no penalty.

I agree. Mississippi uses a width or minimum main beam length as antler restrictions to help with deer like these

No way he's 13". I believe the 13" rule has been good, this is just one of the casualties of such a program.

My thoughts exactly. I think there should be an exception for mature deer like this that don't make the AR.
But then again, not everyone can age deer properly.

That's true but i think many of these deer are killed with the Hope of not being caught

According to a few on TBH if you let them live long enough they will get to 13"

I think they need to go back to a one buck rule for certain counties. You get one buck any size or age. If you hold out and kill a mature deer (4 or 5 or wherever they want to set bar) as determined by a qualified biologist then you can get a "bonus" tag that allows you an extra doe or something.

That would allow new hunters more opportunity to harvest a deer and it would allow the number of mature deer to increase

I am sure that at some point the number of new hunters is going to suffer due to people deciding that all the rules are just not worth it

If you think about it, the current rules allow you to kill an immature buck just because he has one side broken off which is pretty dumb in my opinion
