    Shoulder problem questions

Mine is bone on bone. They say I need a shoulder replacement. To wait as long as possible. I have got the cortisone shot... Helped a little.

Anyone try acupuncture? Did it help pain? They recommended a shot, they use on knees, it puts a buffer between the kneecap and leg bones. Anyone try that? Not covered by insurance, lol, for shoulders... Only knees. But I am willing to fork out the $1000, if it works.

    Thanks for any info

bps3040, had the shoulder replacement done last September. Had it done at Fondren Orthopedic by Dr. Edwards. He is the best at what he does, had the same problem for over 8 years. The PT is done in a pool, it was not bad at all. Never took any pain meds before PT, 3 days a week for 1 hour and finished in 6 weeks. Recovery is 6 months, let your body heal. I have my 1 year check-up next month, should have did this years ago.

ltbre8, thanks for info, Dr Edwards is who they recommend for the surgery. I am 54, so they recommend waiting until it falls off , before having the surgery. Did you try anything else, to help, before making the decision to go for it

I turn 52 in January, I did the WD-40 shots in the shoulder until they didn't work anymore. Dr. Edwards is great, one night in the hospital, a week in the sling and PT started a week after that. Send me a PM with your phone number and we can talk about this. Don't listen to folks who have never had this done, a lot depends on the doctor and you.

My dad (72yo) needed to have this done, but they told him that during his recovery period (6 months to a year) that he would need to avoid doing anything where he could possibly injure (cut/scratch, etc) himself to the point that it might get infected. My dad can't do anything until he gets the blood flowing, so he's opted to wait until he can't stand it anymore.

Was that were the scar is?, range of motion is very good on mine, still have some strength to gain back.

A good friend of mine had rotator cuff surgery last December and it did not work. He is going in again later this month to have major surgery on his shoulder. He is going to a top knotch shoulder surgery specialist down in Fr Collins for this surgery.
He told me he talked to them about shoulder replacement and they did not recommend it at his age, 54, because the lifespan is only 10-15 years on the replacement. So, he is opting for some major surgery on what he has in there now. I don't know anything about it but just wanted to share a current story on a friend of mine.

A common "buffering" injection for knees (Hyaluronan) last several weeks to several months, then must be repeated. They aren't always effective, so it is something of a gamble. Of course, the joint replacement option has its issues too: can be a lengthy recovery, risk of infection, longevity of the implant varies person to person, etc.

For me, it wasn't elbow problems, but knee problems. I put up with painful knees for decades, had all the injections, arthroscopic surgeries, and rehab. The surgeon's advice, like yours, was that I put off surgery as long as possible and that I would know when it was "time". Boy, was he right about knowing when enough was enough!

Gather all the information you can, decide how long you are willing and able to put off surgery, then go from there. I wish you the best outcome!

I had a lot of discussions about how long the plastic in my shoulder will last with the doctor. Actually signed up to be in a case study by the manufacture of the shoulder joint to see how long it will last. My doctor has me signed up for 25 years worth of visits to see him, so we will see. The rod they replace the ball on your arm is titanium, its the plastic type material that becomes the socket that wears out. My decision came down to tired of having pain everyday, nothing over the counter for pain worked, didn't want to become a pain pill junky. Besides who knows how long we will be on this earth, why hurt if you don't have to.

Is he going to have a reverse joint procedure? If the cuff is too far gone you will need to do a reverse. I used to sell total joints all over the southwest. Really hope your shoulder lasts as long as you can.
