    Lease Managers and/or CPA's - Question

Where do you draw the line b/w hobbyist and business. As a lease manager I have no intention of earning a living or even making money as an outfitter. However, could I put together a business plan, start a sole proprietorship call Justin's Outfitting Service, run it as at loss and write off all my hunting expenses at the end of the year? How long could I run it at a loss according to the IRS before they say its not a legit business. I'm just thinking my truck, trailer, 4 wheeler, mobile home at the lease, gas corn, feeders, stands, the cost of the lease, utilities etc are all legit business related expenses. So how do I structure things to be a legit, crappy, business man that can get some tax breaks to help offset what I pay on my other income?

If this is possible and you'd like to be paid for the advice/consulting you offer me. Just PM me. If its legal (thinking it through in my head I see no reason why it couldn't legally be done), then why not take advantage of this. At the very least I'd like to see if the tax savings are worth the pain in the butt to document everything properly.

Nobody has any insight on this topic? Thought it was a reasonable question.

      Lease Managers and/or CPA's - Question

Sorry you lost me at "legit, crappy, business man"

I'm sure it can be legally done, but thanks for trying to pin a loss for a "business" on the rest of us tax payers so you can offset your hunting.

No idea if this can be done.

In for the thrashing that's about to show up.

Personally I like the idea. May start my own dba as an outfitter and not advertise.

No thanks. Guided and dealt with leases for long enough. Only do it for myself and family now.

Thousands of business lose money each year. And write off their losses. I'm fact only abt 1/5 of all tax revenue in the us comes from business bc of this.

Most people don't go into business to intentionally lose money so the taxpayer can front the bill for a hobby.

I know it's just a drop in the bucket but the bucket is overflowing

I believe you need to show a profit (albeit small) every 7 years. I bet you could sell a couple hunts that year, but I'm not an accountant.

I'm no tax expert but I think your tax break would only come off the taxable income from your business and it wouldn't come off you everyday job taxable income, don't really know how you could link them but once again I'm far from a tax expert

I believe you'll also need to show some revenue...

As the lease manager there is revenue I collect from all my hunters. They buy a spot on the ranch I lease. But my expense far out weigh my revenue.

Then you will have to pay tax on that income only to get it back, I think you would be back to square one
