It's a very addictive and expensive habit! It is relaxing though, and like you said, you can build them the way you want.

How did you all get started? Did you read books or have a mentor?

Whats the average cost to get started in just the equipment not the blanks, eyes, etc....

              Thanks,

                Thanks,
I had a mentor when I worked at The Full Stringer in Corpus after High School. You can visit mudhole.com to get some prices on wrapping kits. Don't waste your money on electric wrapping kits. Dryer motors are worth every penny, but electric wrappers are a waste. I do everything by hand. You can also download rod building instructions on their website for free.

                    Awesome work sir

There use to be that one kid on here that made them and convinced a few guys that he'd make them some and then stole their money

Not sure if that ever was resolved or not

I use an American Tackle Power Wrapper with the adjustable chuck.

Electric wrapping motors are great at quickly building up base wraps on large diameter rod blanks.

Electric rod wrappers are very handy to use when building custom surf rods where the open blank, between bottom grip and lower reel seat grip, need 20 plus inches of thread laid down quickly. And it's also great for quickly wrapping tie down sections, where the tie downs are an inch or more in width. Also great for offshore blanks.

I wrap decorative wraps by hand, guides by hand but base wraps, I hit it with the electric wrapper.

                            My wrapping setup.

Top is setup for hand wrap

Bottom is setup for power wrap and dry.

                              Thanks all.

If time ever permits I would love to watch someone build a rod or at least the basics. i know there is a ton of tricks involved.

ATW - I have always liked your surf gear, very nice quality.
