This is real simple to fix...if the car is registered...go to the DMV...say the plates are lost...get a set for for $5.00

The dealer is in the wrong, and THEY CANT KEEP HIS PLATES .....

Dealership can not hold the tags. I can see why they are doing that, they have nothing else to hold on to I'm sure that ur son didn't sign a contract with the dealership for the down payment. If the bank finds out that the down payment has not been received in full at the time of signing the bank can make the dealership buy the contract back. I would call the GM and have an adult conversation with him. I don't see that your sone is not trying to pay for it, I'm sure he would release the tags, If not He can get paper tags every time it expires. Or he can for what Truman said.

What the dealership did with the down payment is fraud. The lender approved the loan in part because the buyer had down payment money. I agree with the above, a sit down CTJ meeting with the GM of the dealership should result in walking out with plates in hand.

So a man owns a dealership and he wants to help a kid out by doing a side loan on a down payment and now the owner is the bad guy? Seriously? Come on guys! And we wonder and get mad when no one will step up and give little Johnny help with his credit rating. SMH!!!!!

That initial kind act has taken a turn so it appears. You are right, the owner made a loan that was to be paid back. According to the OP that is happening as agreed but now the owner is trying to change the terms by demanding the loan be paid in full before handing over the plates. Not sure how this is helping the kid out. Of course we are only hearing one side of the story which comments are then made about. We all know there can be another side to the story.

That would be all fine and dandy, but the issue arose when the owner made the decision to fire his son (whether he deserved it or not) knowing the money was still owed, and then now has decided to hold the plates making driving the car illegal.

If I were the son, I'd be headed to the county tax assessor and asking for new plates.

Agreed Tim, seems everything has to be a fight these days. Dad lend him the money and make him pay you back. He probably has learned the lesson already.

Thanks for the comments everyone, it's a good discussion. The boy dropped off his latest payment today and they gave him a 30 day paper plate so he should be good.

It's not really applicable to this particular conversation, but as the father I see it a bit differently. The boy was saving up for $2500 down which would have taken him another 6-8 weeks (10% down was required by the bank due to low income). The dealership decided to front the money and have him take the car home immediately, which of course a 19 year old is gonna jump on, especially this one as he's got no patience). Aside from the normal sales tactic of always locking in the buyers, I'm thinking they wanted to fire him but sales balked until the car was sold. So they pulled strings to get the car sold then gave him the boot. Now I know the LAST thing I'd want to do right before losing a job would be to finance a brand new vehicle, so the way I see it they selfishly set him up to get screwed.
