    A/C question

There have been several A/C question threads in the past weeks, but I might have an issue, and know that yall have the knowledge to help.

Ours started blowing warm air an hour ago. Outside unit was running and the inside furnace/fan was obviously running. I turned the thermostat up to stop everything, went outside and hosed down the coil (which I just did a few weeks ago so shouldnt have been very dirty), turned the thermostat back down, and we were back in business.

What could have happened? And what do I need to look at to avoid it happening again?

How long did you have it off.
I have seen a dirty filter cause it to freeze up and start blowing warm. Turning it off could have melted the ice and now it works. Just reaching here so it depends on how long you had it off.

Only about 10 minutes, but in this heat, it could have thawed a frozen unit I guess

Are you sure the compressor was running and not just the outside fan motor? Sometimes they can kick off on overload because they have a hard time starting. When you look at the outside unit you will see the fan running and think it is on. That would be my guess

acearrow on target, if thats not it your unit may be a little low on freon allowing the inside coil to freeze up or just starting to freeze. The other problem, and I hope not, some compressors have a internal relief valve that will open at real high pressure and it is an auto reset as pressure drops...ie turning it off and washing the condensing unit coil. If you had the unit serviced earlier this spring and they added freon as hot as it is it could be overcharged.

the grouse also right on :Are you sure the compressor was running and not just the outside fan motor? Sometimes they can kick off on overload because they have a hard time starting. When you look at the outside unit you will see the fan running and think it is on. That would be my guess

I had a similar problem earlier this summer. The compressor was kicking on only about half the time. I would shut it down for a while and then start it up, sometimes the compressor would start, sometimes not. The outside fan would run every time.

I replaced the Start Capacitor and haven't had a problem since.

            Good luck.

Not a chance. Maybe a very thin sheet of ice. Sounds like you compressor was/is over heating and turned off on internal overload. Prob need to get someone out and see what's up.

Thanks for all of the tips! Haven't had an issue since. I will dig into it in the morning when it's cooler out.
