Anything not made overseas if possible. I hear Lodge is the only one made in the U.S. but even they use Chinese iron. Try to find an old Wagner. They are the best. No longer made but they can still be found used.

Lodge. if you want to buy new. cooking surface as smooth as glass if you buy used and can get it. re-season is a job if it has more rust than cast. we have one that is more than 100 years old. and will cook a ribeye in just a 1/8 stick of butter and some olive oil. have a look at flea markets. garage sales. Academy, best price for new. don't buy anything from CHINA.

You want old cast iron. The new stuff sucks even Lodge. They are mass produced and "pre-seasoned" is a joke. The two good brands of old cast iron are Wagner ware and Griswold. You can find them in antique stores and with a little elbo grease and some time in the oven they will be the most bad *** cook ware you have ever used. Just my two cents.

Just restored my wife's grandfathers set. One is 17 inches, huge. It's a lodge but very very old. I scrubbed the rust out with steel wool and reseasoned. The surface is like glass.

I have an old cast iron skillet that I don't even know where it came from. I think it was a gift from my grandparents and was ancient when I got it. It is awesome. I have 2 new lodges and they work and I use them all the time. Fried some halibut and rockfish in a lodge tonight. Did great.

I got a couple of Wagners that I purchase at Coles flea market in Pearland Tx for $12 each.
