    Long Range Deer Hunting

Well, I'm primarily a traditional shooter, but since I will be hunting public land this fall, I decided to break out my compound. I've been practicing out to 50 yards, and if I can find a couple more pins, I'll push that out to 60 or 70. My goal is to be able to take a deer at 50 yards this fall. What's the farthest that you've taken a deer with a bow?

For me it's 35 but I typically stand hunt over feeders and hand corn trying for 20-30.

Were I in your shoes, I'd be striving for a max of 50 as well. The reason that I'd say max is due to the lightening quick reflexes of our deer. When well practiced, I'm comfortable to 75 and with a little practice have done okay at 100 but wouldn't feel that way on a 125 pound coiled spring of a WT.

Obviously I'm hoping for a 30 yard or less shot. But if a 40 or 50 yard shot (like the ones I passed on last year) on a calm deer with good conditions presents itself, I want to be able to take it with confidence.

I have shot 55 yards on a calm whitetail eating at a feeder and hit him in the head as he ducked and turned. Shot was a 10 ring if he didnt move. I was shooting a Bowtech Experience at around 300fps at the time. Bow wasnt overly loud but not as quiet as some. They can cover some ground in a split second and they hear the sound three to four times as fast as the arrow gets there.
I dont think Whitetails should be shot at over about 40 yards personally. My opinion and nothing more.

Shot a doe a few years back at 55 from my climber. Complete pass thru she ran 35 yards, from my old browing boss vortex 280 fps

I would recommend practicing well beyond 50 in order to shoot confidently when buck fever hits. Before I get criticized for saying this, I'm not saying you have to, nor am I saying it is the only way to do things. It is just what has worked for me in the past.

^^^^VERY good point above. Practice out to 75 on a 3D target to get the best feel for the job at hand.
