That play came to mind when I was watching the video.

Where this play seems contradicting to me.... How many times have you seen a fielder dive in the stands or dugout for a foul ball. Their body completely leaves the field and as long as they hang on to the ball, it's an out.

After watching the video Smart posted it is clearly a HR. No different then if he would have ran into the wall and dropped the ball over the fence.

ball went over the wall and wasn't caught out by the outfielder.
definitely weird, but also a home run.
what would be the alternate call?

catch made as momentum carries Betts over the HR wall

ball clearly out of glove , and on top of the bullpen tarp

if he maintains full control, it would have been ruled an out

                  .

I don't think it matters if he dropped it or not...if it's over the wall and the fielder leaves the field of play in between the foul lines, it's a home run. Otherwise you open up the possibility of fielders hopping into the bullpens and stands to catch a home run and claiming it's an out. JMO
