          We always called them Devils walking stick, or Devils club.

            ... are the projections horizontal? Then it is Prickly ash (also called Tickle tongue and Hercules Club). it has a slight numbing agent in it that if you chew it will deaden the tongue.

            If they are vertical and the leaves are very rough and kind of sticky, then it is Winged Elm...
