Where to go? Long weekend in the mountains?

Ok, I'm looking for some ideas on a mini vacation. No kids on this trip, don't want to drive forever, and would prefer mountains rather than the beach. ( I want cool air) New Mexico? Arkansas?
I was thinking Durango but the 12 hours or more behind the wheel is a possible deal breaker.
Looking for a nice resort area with activities a couple of adults can enjoy. Will be leaving late Thursday August 6th, (or maybe Friday morning) and returning Sunday August 9th.

    Ready, GO!

Ruidoso would be closer. Been a wet summer, i would assume cool. further north would be Red River or Angelfire

Chama, NM. Just got back. Absolutely beautiful with great fishing, hiking, historic railroad and train trips. I can recommend a great B&B there too. Only issue would be the drive. It is 10 hrs of drive time, took us 12 with the kids and several stops. You go through Sante Fe so you could stop there for some great restaurants and things to do for a day at about hour 8. Good luck!

For such a short trip I would go with Ruidoso first and Red River as my second option.

Our Arkansas hills will be hot! Not the dusty Texas heat, but also not Rocky Mountain cool, by any means. It's no longer prime float season up here, but we've had adequate rain and there's rain in the forecast for the Ozarks over the next several days. Looks like the high is 85 today and 80 tomorrow for our deer camp, then back to low 90s. To cool off, I'd suggest a trip to the Little Red or the White for some trout fishing. They've been running high because the lakes are way up, but fishing has been pretty solid. Renting a houseboat from Bull Shoals marina is always fun.

How big is the cabin in Broken Bow? We usually try to go up once a year. Would be 4 adults and two kids this year most likely.

Ruidoso is always a solid choice. My hometown is 30 minutes down the hill. We would go up there almost every weekend. Take a look at the Innsbrook Cabins, there is an awesome little par 3 course, trout pond and reasonable prices. Also, go eat at Casa Blanca Mexican restaurant, or if you don't mind driving a bit, go to the Old Road Cafe in Mescalero.

Well, my partner in crime for this weekend really had her heart set on Durango so we decided to make it a 4 day trip instead of 3 and I just booked a condo in Durango.
Thank you all for the input. I will keep them in mind for future adventures.
