Guided Elk Hunt Help

My dad and I want to do a "bucket list" hunt together next year for Elk. I am bow-only, dad is rifle only (60 yrs young). We are looking to find something in the lower 48 that is pretty nice with a good opportunity to take a bull each.

Do you guys and gals have any recommendations for locations or outfitters? Personal experience with a good or bad outfitter? What are the general success percentages for spot and stalk with a bow?

Yeah ive tried to convert him but he is stubborn. He is too big into fishing to set the time aside to learn a new sport.

Bowhunting elk on public runs upwards of the 15/17% range. Outfitted hunts on private will at least double your odds. Rifle on private would be much better odds but not a slam dunk.

Archery and Muzzleloader overlap in a few places like Colorado. Should be late september which is rut. You might look I to that.

I hunted at Three Forks Ranch in northern Colorado a few years back. Pretty awesome place. Rifle would have been no problem at all. I actually shot a nice bull with my bow (all of a 4 yard shot) but couldn't find it. They called him in two weeks later and killed him, with my arrow still in him. We saw a ton of bulls and I could have easily taken some smaller ones, but I am kinda picky sometimes. Great facilities too. It's pretty pricey though. I was a guest so that part didn't bother me. And you can hunt rifle or bow, all season I believe.

What was the temperature range that you saw during the day/night?
What are the typical shot distances with your bow?

I've only been during September. Temps ranged from High 30's morning to Mid 80's in the afternoon depending on when in September and cold fronts.

Rifle season - will be 30's to 70's

You would need to check with Kyle to ensure you can bowhunt during rifle season. I pretty sure you can. But keep in mind this will be past the rut so Archery becomes more difficult.

Another couple of key points I forgot to make.

All of Folsom's hunts are on Private Land low fenced - your tags are guaranteed (if he is not booked)

Second - The highest elevation you will hunt is 7500-8000 feet. So as a flat lander it is MUCH easier than 10k to 11K in Colorado.

My shots have ranged from 65-10 yards. My Average is 43 yards. I tell everyone that goes on their first Elk hunt prepare for 60 and pray for 20.

By prepare I mean be absolutely dead on @ 60 yards. Practice with your range finder and get a get used to knocking an arrow, ranging a target and the drawing, aiming and shooting without ever taking your eyes off your target. It has to be second nature.

Key missed opportunities - I have seen over the years are people that failed to range the bull or got busted knocking an arrow / moving etc;.. because they took their eyes off the elk.
