    Replace you tree stand straps!

Just a reminder to everyone with tree stands to change your straps holding the stands and ladders to the trees (If you leave them up). Last season my brother was getting into a hang on stand and the straps that hold the stand to the tree broke and dumped him 22' to the ground. This was before he had a chance to hook his harness on! He had a burst fracture in his vertibre and had to care flighted out of the woods. After lengthy surgery, he has recovered and was not paralyzed! Also recommend a Hunter Safety climbing safety rope where you hook on at ground level and never unhook until you get back to ground level!

Glad he looks to be ok.
Great reminder, we check straps and use the climbing rope to clip to as well.

I typically drive a couple long nails just below the seat and bend them up around the tree contact point or drill a hole in the frame and screw a lag bolt into the tree. I dont trust straps.
Glad to hear your brother got the chance to recover

              I never use straps.
I use chains with binders and all issues solved.

Good reminder, it makes me shake my head when I see ratchet straps out in the sun for years just rotting away.

With a climber you can attach the tree strap to your harness with a bit of slack in it, and move it up the tree as you climb. Slows you down a bit but worth it to be safe.

Good reminder folks..........these mishaps are becoming fewer over the years but they are real life changers!

tug on your steps or stand before getting in regardless of how long its been up. i put a ladder up one evening and returned to hunt it the next morning. got in and a big gust of wind hit me and that stand came loose and fell straight to the ground. squirrels must have chewed through my strap over night.

Safety ropes are suspect also. I have a friend his safety rope failed on him. 18' to the ground, broke ribs, leg. 6 month recovery time.

Good reminder for sure. When I use straps I never rely on just the single strap that secures the stand to the tree. Purchased a heavy duty racheting strap that can be tensioned much better than what came with the stand. I also don't leave the stand or straps out in the weather.

Going to ask a dumb question here, but can you be more specific as to what you use?

He's probably talking about load binders. I do the same thing with my ladder stands. Use chain and load binders and just leave them up year round. You can find them at Northern or Harbor Freight in lots of sizes and not very expensive. Here is the type I use... http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...ct_13791_13791

I use chain and turnbuckle. Had too many straps break with me hugging a tree and trying to tighten them.
