Be careful practicing on pavement. It eats up the fly line pretty quick. They don't cast very well or float very well when the coating gets beaten up. Try it on grass and water even better. Water gives some resistance and will help load the rod. That feeling will help you develop your casting stroke.

If you're in a boat, watch your line at your feet, you can get it tangled quickly. You might want to consider a basket. Also, watch the line as it goes into the reel and make sure it doesn't get hung up on the butt of the rod.
Get some cutting foreceps. You can cut line easily and then use them to get a hook out that's buried deep.
Get a lesson, wind knots will ruin a trip.
