    Electrician - replace panel

I think I will be needing to replace my electrical panel. I have an original Zinsco panel from 1968. What am I looking at cost wise? Does anybody know a rough figure?

Any info is helpful. I live in Richardson.

Where is your panel located now?

Better check your local code. You may have to have your grounding redone and everything. Some cities, like Fort Worth, are getting real picky when permits are pulled.

              Call Frisco electric
They're flat rate and can quote you over the phone.
Cheaper than Milestone and it'll get you a decent idea of cost

to echo DRT.... The city will most likely require you you to do more work than just replacing the panel. They use the permits for things like that as an excuse to make you bring certain things up to code. The amount of "extra" work will vary by city and the codes they adopt.

anywhere from $800 to $2000 for just the panel. Add another $200-$400 if your grounding needs replaced.

For this repair you will have to pull the meter. This means that you will have to pull a permit, which means you have to have a licensed electrician to perform the work and a city inspector will come out. I do not know all the requirements in your area, but lets assume: Only replacement of the box and breakers. I have had this quoted a couple of times at around $1500. Now this can vary greatly depending on the size of the current box, and the size of the new box. For instance, if you have a 100 amp box with 10 breakers and you want to go 200 amp box with 20 breakers. Now you are looking at the electric company running new wires to the weather head, and you running new wires from the weather head to the box. Your grounding requirements may also go up. I wouldn't want to think what happens if you have aluminum wiring. Years ago in Indiana I had my box upgraded and it had to go outside...period. Make sure you get a quality electrician who understands the policies in your area along with safe installation. Get multiple quotes. Good luck.

They are all correct. DO NOT CALL MILESTONE. With the panel in the garage at least it will not have to go outside. You may have to add a primary and secondary ground and it will have to be sized according to the new service size not the old one. Yes the cities are getting picky but it is to cover the consumer and their families lives. Get at least 3 quotes and ask them before they come out if they charge for an estimate. If they do and they are the ones that are most trustworthy then ask them to knock off the estimate price from the total bill, most will do this. Good luck!!!!!
