It is backlit and there have been no problems using it in the dark.

i have an etrex camo i'd sell(upgraded to a legend) if someone wants a used one.1 small "scuff" on the screen but other than that it works great!saved my butt a few times in the woods and has gotten me to my honey hole in the dark a thousand times with no issues at all. make me an offer
