    ^^^^ This can work.
Probably need to treat the exposed area for bugs, borers etc. too. I have seen either cement or other material used to fill in the remaining hole in cases where rods are used.

I would also open up the canopy a little with some well thought out pruning. BTW don't climb up in the tree to do the pruning

I would definitely recommend pruning. in conjunction with the threaded rod or ratchet straps

I would find me some 1/4" cable and make several wraps around it and secure with multiple cable clamps

I have one in my back yard that split during Ike. Pulled it back together with a com-along and bolted it with two 1" all threads.

Isn't that what wood glue is for?

I agree with all tread, and a cable to pull them together. I would leave the cable on there.

I would use something larger than a regular washer. Like a 4"x 4" 1/4" with the proper hole drilled in it

The video above is what I was thinking. Long drill bit, all thread, washers, and nuts.

Cable the tree above the split. And no, it will not hurt a healthy tree to run a couple of eye bolts and a cable through it up high, to force the split back together. If you countersink the bolt heads, they will grow over and you wont even see them in a few years. This was done with a large oak on my grandfathers place. That tree is doing just fine, but would have surely split in two by now if they had not fixed it.

Use a com-along up higher to pull back together then run the all threads through it. If the tree-house guy on TV puts big screw anchors for base supports dont see why it would hurt.

I have also seen people pull back together and they didn't wrap around the area that was split instead they tied it off with large chain at the same higher spot so it cant open back up.

That will always be a weak spot for that tree. You probably need to really trim it up to remove the extra weight and stresses(wind) on that area.

Tie your cable up higher it will take the weight off the splice vs wrapping it around the split.

Yep 3/4" all thread and 1" impact. It will have no choice then but to act right. Paint it up with some pine tar to keep the bugs out.
