When I hunt the early season in East Texas (bottoms and thick woods) I'm looking for 3 things water, bedding, and food. I've found water being the most important for me. I like to be 100-150 yards of a good standing water source. Try not to be sitting in the deer's bedroom but somewhere in between. Accessing your stand quietly and your scent control is incredibly important too. From my experience deer including the bigger bucks aren't traveling any more than they need to during the early season. I feel most of the deer I am hunting are staying within a 500 yard stretch both night and day which again is why access to your stand is crucial. Make note that early season can be tough because of how hot it is and if you plan on walking to that "special stand setup" that's a 1/2 or 1/4 mile in the heart of the woods your going to need to do it at a sluggish rate just to monitor sweating. So it's a good idea to time yourself before you actually make that first walk in the dark to the stand.
