So this past weekend was my birthday weekend. The kids are out of town and it was just me and the wife. We had plans to go out fishing on Saturday (me fishing, her tanning) but ended up hanging out with friends instead. Sunday we were gonna go out on the boat again but when we went to the storage unit to get it, there was a line at the gate of people trying to get in. Turns out the passcodes were not working and nobody could get a hold of the property owners. So we went back to the house and were just hanging out. That is when I suggested we go on a hike...and I'll bring my gun "just in case" any pigs are seen. It took a little while to convince her as she saw through my guise but she agreed since we didn't get to do any fishing.
So the wife and I headed up to the SHNF yesterday and went on our "hike." We hiked in about 2 miles and it was blazing hot outside, so we turned back and headed towards the truck. She was commenting how we didn't have to be quiet anymore and just clomping down the trail. I told her we could still scare up some hogs but she was not having it. We turned a tight corner, heard a grunt and about a 100lb hog ran out of the brush about 20 feet in front of us. She jumped back and I tried to take my gun off my shoulder fast enough to get a shot but that hog was in the brush in about 2 seconds flat. The woods were so thick he ran in about 15 yards as I could see the trees moving and then stopped. We could not see him. There was also A LOT of movement to our left as what sounded like a whole herd barreling through the woods away from us. Then everything got quiet.
That is when SHE went into tactical hunting mode. She was giving me hand signals... I hear them, go over there, wait, don't move, be quiet, get ready etc...like she had been hunting for years. That was when a bunch of the herd started grunting and squealing about 30 yards from us in the thick stuff. We waited just down the trail as I had hoped that the separated big boy would try to get back to the others and cross the trail again but no go. They were just in the woods laughing away at us.
The wife started getting mad..."lets go in there and get them", "I'll flush them out, " etc... I had to remind her we did not have on snake boots and the brush was as thick as Vietnam so we could not keep up with them.
On our way out she mentioned going back today to hunt those pigs. She was going to have nightmares about that pig getting away as well...even turning our two pitbulls into hog dogs...who by the way have never seen a hog in their lives.
I told her if she wants to start going hunting with me I will buy her a new AR...we will see what she says tonight when she gets home. Just thought you guys would get a kick out of my wife...Rambo.
