So My 7 Year Old Wants to Build a Blind
I can't remember getting anything "free" as a kid even though my parents had the money. (Although I'm sure I did, but I didn't get the pride through the handouts)
If I wanted something I had to mow the yard, wash the cars etc... I realized I could couldn't mow their yard more than one time a week, even though I tried. I ended up knocking on neighbors doors to grow my business. Word spread and mom would help me load the mower up and watch me mow yards all weekend. I opened my own checking account before I was eleven. I had jobs through highschool and college.
Funny you brought up taxes. I remember my first purchase. I was probably your sons age. I had a $1.00 and it was burning a hole in my pocket. I picked out a $.99 Lego kit and marched to the counter. Cashier said that total was $1.07. I told her it was $.99. She said there was tax. I told her I didn't want any tax, just the Legos. She tried to explain I had to have tax and I tried to convince her I didn't. This went on for a minute until a lady in line paid the difference.
I say all this to say Your son WILL remember this and appreciate you for it. I thank my parents even today for the real life lessons they taught me.
