    UTV Registration

I bought a new UTV (The one in my avatar) and they said it will be registered almost like a street vehicle. I did not expect to get anything like the package they sent me.

I received two full size license plate and a registration sticker just like in my truck. Also a document saying where it is legal to use the UTV ""On-road"

Does anyone else have experience with this? What is allowed and what is not?

Also where and how is everyone mounting those huge license plates and putting the registration stickers??

    Thanks for the help!

I would think you would need blinkers and brake lights for it to be street legal. I don't know that I've heard of anybody HAVING TO register their UTV in Texas. I know I didn't have to register my Ranger in 2007.

I think there's a registration required if you are going to use them on public property (not necessarily street legal). Same for 4 wheelers. I'm sure someone on here knows for sure.

        Is the document not specific?

Mary and I rec'd the same packet for our Teryx. According to the paperwork that we rec'd with the plates, and if I read it right, if you have the plates, sticker, and a "slow moving vehicle triangle" on the back, you would be legal on the streets. I would be interested in hearing anyone's input on this also.

My ranger title says it can not be registered. I know the slow moving vehicle triangle is for less than 25mph vehicles. Robinhoods step dad drives one around schulenburg (rhino I think) I am sure he will chime in

I saw one parked across from the courthouse in Mason, in front of a cafe, a couple weeks ago. I had heard about them letting people drive them on the highways. This came off of the TXDOT web site.

              A:
All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are regulated by state and federal laws.

A vehicle is classified as an ATV if it:

has a saddle, bench or bucket seat,
              has three or more wheels,
is designed for off-highway use, and
is not designed by the manufacturer for farm or lawn care.
ATVs may not be driven on public roads unless the driver is:

a farmer or a rancher traveling no more than 25 miles,
              a public utility worker, or
              a law enforcement officer.
All ATVs driven on a public road must have a triangular orange flag on top of an eight-foot pole attached to the back of it.

To be operated on public property, ATVs must have:

              a brake system,
              a muffler system,
a United States Forest Service qualified spark arrester,
              head and tail light, and
an Off Highway Vehicle decal issued by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
ATVs are required to be titled, but not registered. To title your ATV, take the following to your county tax office:

Evidence of ownership, such as a Manufacturer Certificate of Origin (MCO) or title,

A friend of mine registered his Polaris Ranger on his own. He said it was not an easy task, but now he can safely drive it on the beach and on some public roads without any issues.

From the document I was provided with the guidelines listed the only thing my Teryx lack to be legal is a turn signal, a mirror, and a horn. I can add these all very easily if I want to.

I do not plan to use it except at the hunting lease and maybe to tool around the neighborhood. Therefore I may not even bother with putting the plates and things on...

I would like to see how people have their license plates mounted if anyone else on here has their UTV registered...

Be very CAREFUL registering your UTV. I have a friend that has to appear in court in Galveston County for speeding in a registered Arctic Cat Prowler on the beach and for violating Transportation Code 501.155. Read form VTR-471 very good before anyone with anything other that a mule or (factory) governed UTV applies for tags. When he turned in his VTR_471 he lied about the maximum speed being only 25mph. He was ticketed for 52,and charged with a 3rd degree felony for falsifying documents. Galveston County before the storm was ticketing all UTVs even the licensed ones, and they know the top speed of all UTV"S. I don't know how tough other places are but Crystal Beach was not a UTV friendly place this past summer.

bought a mule in march. dont need to register it. to use it on public land all you need is the $8 OHV decal. besides why register when you wont be driving down the freeway or going to the grocery store in the thing anyways.

as long as you have the slow moving sign on it you dont need it registered, right? If you do have the slow sign is there a top speed you can drive on the road?

Yeah, he got his registered but I don't think he has blinkers or brake lights. He drives his Rhino around town more than he does his truck. Not sure of allowed speed, but I know we were hitting 45 on the streets by their house.
