Great restaurants that are not chains?

I travel quite a bit for work, I'm assuming there are a few on here that do.

What are some good restaurants you have been to that isn't a chain

Last year I went to Charleston, SC and went to a restaurant named FIG, it stands for Food Is Good. It was a little on the pricey side but really good.

Two years ago I went to Phoenix and ate at a place called Citizens Public House, they had a Chopped Salad there that believe it or not is one of the best things I've ever eaten.

Check the Yelp pages for the city. The site called "Open Table" has good reviews, too.

            Gihooley's - San Leon

            Killen's Steakhouse - Pearland

            DiBella's Italian - Galveston

                X2 for Peli-Peli (technically a Houston zip)

They have great scallops but there is a tri-tip onion ring mash potato contraption that will blow you away. Skip the salad.

I try very hard NOT to eat at the chain type places. its hard work starting and keeping a restaurant open. most are hit and miss. but some are worth a repeat.

For some uncommon (and some well known) gems in places I frequently visit

                              Houston:
BRC (which stands for big red c()ck)
                              Down House
                              Vieng Thai
                              Polonia
Common bond bakery (only get macarons or stuff with dough in it, their other sweets ain't great)
                              Lola
                              Oporto
                              Pho Dalat

                              Dallas:
Vietnam (yes, that's the actual name)
                              BB bop
Olivella's (if you prefer neopolitan style pizza, this is the best I've ever had)
                              JD's chippery
                              Breadwinners
                              Kuby's (for breakfast)

                              Morgan City/Berwick, LA:
                              Petroleum Club
                              Sweet and simple cupcakes
                              Castellanos

                              Houma, LA:
Mr. Ronnie's donuts (and beer and burgers, served 24 hours, with gambling machines in the back! )

                              Seattle:
Molly Moon Ice Cream (a chain, but god is it good)
                              Swinery (if you love pig...)
                              Biscuit b!tch

                              Hanover, NH:
                              Ramunto's Pizza

                              Austin:
                              Din Ho
Antonellis (the best place in texas for cheese and charcuterie)
Draught House (not for the food)
                              Tam Deli and Cafe

                              Denton:
Tortilleria La Sabrocita (best when hammered, they're open super late)
