    Axis Range in Medina County

I have land 12 miles NW of Hondo in Medina county and would like to know how close the Axis deer population is. If you hunt or own land in Medina county and can say that you have axis deer, please state the general location. So far I have never seen a single Axis, trail camera or otherwise. But they should be relatively nearby.

    Thank you

I use to hunt 2 miles west of D'Hanis off 90. I had one Axis doe walk by a camera one time. Never saw any other exotics other than a big Elk cow that bedded on the 50 acres we were hunting. I had her on camera everyday, but never saw her sitting in the stand

Hmm it seems that they are to the north, west, and even southwest of my location. but for some reason this area remains axis free.

That elk must have been an escapee

Do you have water running through your place? It seems like they stay along creeks and rivers.

I have water available year round in the form of a tank/pond. The surrounding properties have tanks as well. But, the nearest creek is over a mile away (Seco)

I was on a place in Hondo off 87 I believe between Hondo and Tarpley and I never saw one Axis . We had a nice creek bottom running through the lease also.

Someone on another forum reported having some for years just a few miles north of you on 173. They seem to hang up around there and not come further.

This is surprising to me. I have a buddy from high school whose family used to have a ranch in the same area and there were quite a few axis in their area

I forget who, but somebody posted pics of axis seen right outside of Helotes to your NW

Our ranch is off 251 about 1/2 way between Hondo and Bandera and we do not have axis on our place yet. We have seen some about two miles down the road from us, but not many, and pretty recent. We have been on our place 34 years now.

Youre probably about 5 miles east of me. Depending on how far away the axis were that you saw, yours may be the closest sighting I've found so far.

I hunt off of 462 just south of Tarpley and we have a good amount of Axis on the place.

Correction ,Actually we where off 462 about 8 miles from town . Hondo Creek ran through the middle. No Axis spotted , one person claimed to have seen a fallow , one Angora shot .

Seems like the line is right south of Utopia where the Axis numbers start, low fence, with increasing numbers north of there. Anywhere south of there all the way to Hwy 90 there are pockets of them mainly along drainages.
