    Machine Guarding Safety ?

Any industrial safety experts out there that can point me to the right standard or regulation on machine guarding around rotating equipment? Wondering what is recommended distance guarding must be from moving equipment and any required specifications on the actual guarding such as material type, design, gauge, how it should be braced or bolted, etc... Thanks

I don't know if OSHA has any set standards (I looked in my 1926 book and couldn't see any), but I found a link to an MSHA PDF that might help.

    Maybe This?

All exposed moving equipment must be guarded. Call OSHA, they will fill you in!

This will be an enclosure with interlocks wired to control panel. Ive seen examples online of these enclosures around drum tumblers and rotating mixers. I'll take a look at the above referenced MSHA link

Are you governed by MSHA or OSHA regulations? There's a big difference in most of the regulations.

EDIT: What is the business and what are you guarding?

29 - 1910 OHSA CFR, Subpart O (Page/s 305-338) - Machine and Machine Guarding. If you don't have a current copy (January 2014) , you can download it for "Free" from the OSHA Site.

I work as an Instructor/Teacher for the Army's Basic Industrial Hygiene Course and know my way around the OSHA Safety Regulations.

If it's a Rotating grinding wheel for example) The gap between the Guard and the actual wheel should be no more than 1/8"

Hope this helps and if you need anything else ... PM me

It's actually a rotating mixer unit for plastics industry. It's not high speed nor full 360 revolution. It cycles back & forth through a 180 degree cycle during mixing to prevent buildup on vessel wall. So it's more related to an enclosed area type guarding with slide or hinge door access by personnel that will be interlocked. Looking for specs on distance from rotating part, height, material type, how it is required to be secured. I'm not seeing much other than general statements as " should be sufficient distance to not contact moving part by reaching over or through and secured well enough it's not easily removed, etc...No specified dimensions that I can find

In all of our inspections they always looked for points of access that allowed someone to reach in between the guard and equipment.

Thanks! We were planning install around a 1-2" gap between machine frame baseplate and start of guarding enclosure.

Being its a general moving equipment guard, there won't be a space requirement. Only thing you need is a secure guard that prevent an employee from contacting the equipment.
