Ok gents, I switched gears. Thanks for the solid advice.

We picked up a single shot .223 with a scope this weekend but the stock is too long for her. Any suggestions on where to get a youth stock?

Took the .223 over to Larry Pockrus near Ponder this afternoon. He cut it down and is getting it ready for her.

Looking forward to getting out to the range with her next week.

This is the first time I've met Larry. Seems like good people.

Question: She is going to shoot her first deer this fall. What is the heaviest .223 round you would recommend while still maintaining accuracy?

Good stuff! That looks like a happy girl.

If you reload, the 65gn Sierra Game King is a proven effective bullet for hunting.

What's the rate of twist in the barrel? THAT will decide on how heavy you can go. I'll be shooting 80 grainers out of my 223AI but it has an aftermarket 1/7 twist barrel on it.

Daniel, kickeez makes a top notch pad IMO. I have a couple on guns.

Thanks guys. How would a man go about finding out the twist rate?

Start by closely looking to see if it is stamped on there somewhere.

Next would be to look up the manufacturing specs, or call the manufacturer.

After that, some careful counting and measuring, but I've never had to, someone else will have to give tips on that method.

The gun will have to tell you that. But as for suggestions I would start with the 62 grain Federal Fusion, or the old blue and grey box federal power points or the 65 grain Sierra Game kings like Gummi suggested.

If you want to step up to a premium bullet I would get the 55 grain Barnes.

Don't worry so much about weight but rather a bullet designed for medium game, not a Varmint bullet like ballistic tips, Vmax, etc.

Try to look it up. If that fails then you can measure with a good spinning handled cleaning rod and a brush. I bet you can find the info online though.

Larry cut the stock down and it fits her perfectly. She is ready to hit the range!

                      Should be fun.
