90's Jeep Cherokee as a DD??

    GS,

Recently found myself without a vehicle due to wreck; I am fine for which I am thankful. That being said, i plan on buying my wife a new car and buying myself something a little more affordable(5k ish). I am trying to stay away from tons of payments.

I need something i can put a car seat in, but still be able to use for hunting and fishing frequently.

Any current XJ drivers that can chime in? Am i making a mistake? Vehicle is relatively low miles (125k) and straight body.

    Thanks!

I bought a 2000 XJ sport this past November. It's a running dude for sure. The six cylinder is a strong motor and it's pretty easy to work on. I bought mine as a lease ride, and have driven it back and forth from DFW to San Angelo without issues. Parts are easy to come by and lots of aftermarket stuff if you want to beef it up.

I had a 99 Cherokee Sport. Loved that thing, but wanted a truck instead. Love my truck, but that was a great vehicle for all the reasons above.

Decent gas mileage, wasnt hard on tires. Thinking about getting a second to drive back and forth to the lease.

My buddy has a 98 4.0 automatic with over 300*** on it I think the only think beside regular maintenance is the water pump. I've had some good old times in that jeep

Be aware that the stock AC does not reach back to the back seat too well, if that is where the car seat will be. I had a '94 and the back seat passengers always complained about lack of AC. A big sheet of plastic might help a lot.

Otherwise, solid truck. Neutral safety switch and front hubs are expensive (~$180 each). Get 4x4, mud tires, no lift no gears, maybe lunchbox lockers and two harbor freight winches, and you are set to go most anywhere.

I had a 1996 model with the 4 liter high output 6 cylinder.

Great vehicle. No significant issues. It would really get up and go as well.

Only thing I would say is the gas mileage (especially compared to today's standards) leaves some to be desired. I think mine averaged about 15 mpg, which isn't too great for a 6 cylinder; considering most V8's today do as good or better than that.

most of the mods available are on the cheap if you compare it to modding a full size truck. That one of the reasons I bought my kid one. Its a learning tool for him so he can learn how to do his own maint and they are relatively cheap to repair (seeing how I would probably have to sink some money into it myself) Sitting on 32's, four 1/2" lift....

Excellent looking jeep. And your points are all reasons I am in the market for one.
