    Ac help 911

Is this the "soft start" capacitor my home generator people installed?

Either way where can I get one?

Whole control panel in outside Trane unit

The black one is the start capacitor and there is also a starting relay. The silver one is a run capacitor. They are rated in Microfarads and volts. The microfarads symbol is something like ufd. You can get them on Amazon or any local AC house if they sell to the public. See if there is a Johnstone Supply in your area

It's usually called a hard start kit but yeah you can get one at an ac supply house. You shouldn't "need" it to run your unit though. Just helps not hit so many start amps.

The ones we used at the AC place I use to work for charged about $500 for them. But that place was full of crooks, so I'm sure you can find it much cheaper. Not needed, but supposedly helps the system last longer. I didn't do AC for very long, so my knowledge is minimal.

That's ridiculous. It's about a $20 part at most. You can use a supco spp6 for the right tonnnage.

That's a 5-2-1 start kit. My next question is if your unit is down what made you suspect the start kit?

Is the hard start kit bad?

Hard start exploded on the suspect unit. The picture was of the same part on the twin working unit.

Turns out that was a symptom of the bigger issue.....compressor is bad.

Gotcha. Was wondering from the pic Bc nothing looked wrong. Lol

My first thought was a compressor problem. Hope you get it fixed soon.

When you replace it be sure to get the kit with start cap and relay that one that is there is not original parts from TRANE.
Be sure the new one is the right size cap.

Correct. This was added by my home back up generator people.

I gave up on DYI and have turned it over to my AC Guy.

                      Thanks for everyone's assistance.

I'm tellin ya, that place was full of bad news. Huge company here, installs $20,000+ residential systems regularly. Wouldn't give them a dime
