Trespassers on my farm

Have to share this as I find it funny although my wife did not. So Sat morning around 3 am my wife wakes me up to tell me someone is in our pasture. I get up put on my clothes and head outside and sure enough I can hear a guy yelling at his dog to go get him boy. We have lots of hogs and this guy brought his dogs without permission on our place. Next thing I see is the lights of a side by side running through the middle of my hay pasture. I get the atv started and told the wife to get my glock. Turn on the high beams and gun the ATv to intercept. When I'm running thevATv full throttle down the pasture it backfires and dies. This part is important because of the wife's reaction. I get down the pasture and the trespassers go silent and kill the lights. At this point I'm in the middle of a dark field with a gun in my hand and I figure I probably should of thought this one out. If they are pig hunting they may have nv and then I'm a sitting duck. I can't find them so I head back. When I get to the house The wife is on the phone with 911 Operator just told them they shot me (backfire from ATV quarter mile away). Long story short got visit from the LEO around 4a. Long night.

That's what I asked her. I told her if they shot at me you would of heard a lot more gun fire via myself. She thought for sure the backfire was a rifle report.

You take after some trespassing poachers and you're questioning why she called the cops? Is there something you aren't telling us about your property? Your wife called the cops because she felt you were in danger which I totally understand.

Next time Ill just put some rapid fire in the dirt from a safe distance and scare me good. I figure if the Mrs thought the backfire was a report so did they. Hopefully there won't be a next time.

I understand her fear I just didn't think twice about the backfire. She was very scared and worked up about it. It's funny after the fact I guess.

i'm glad no one was hurt, the scenario you described could have turned out much worse. Chasing off into the night against an unknown number of assailants with just a pistol was probably not the smartest decision.

They came through the south fence line. There's a gate I don't have locked but do now with no trespass signage. There were ATv tracks diagonally acrossy my 20 acre back pasture. The Sheriff wanted to go after them but they would have just gotten stuck back there.

Hopefully. The wife is kind of freaked out. You don't expect that crap out in the country. People are supposed to know better. Probably kids home from college for the summer.
