How do they sleep at night?!?!

Air conditioning repair companies...my a/c quit working today. Just great, right? Call out the a/c guy who says I should consider putting in a whole new system because the type I have takes some kind of freon that is being phased out (thank you very much liberal democrats). I asked what the range of pricing can be for that..... $5-10K. What a kick in the junk! I had him add a couple lbs of freon & a new wet switch to my drain line to the tune of $400. And, I have an appointment w/ their estimator / sales guy on Sat. I have no intention of replacing this unit unless have too. They've got you by the short curlies, I'll tell ya. This is Tx. It's friggin HOT and you must have a/c. The a/c companies know this and boy to they take advantage of the fact. It's like legalized robbery.....or maybe legalized sexual assault. I haven't figured out which yet.

I live in weatherford and have the same issue..

One of my shop units wouldn't come on the other day.. I specifically asked him if the fact that the filters were pretty dirty could be the reason it wasn't coming on.. He said no.. Our AC is really high and hard to get to so rather than changing them and trying it i said well just come out.. He comes out and changes the filter and it kicks right on.. There is your 350$ bill.. We have paid this A/c company over like 25K in the last 7 years fixing our dam A/c

So the whole replacement is based on the outdated freon? Surely there is still some of the non hippy stuff floating around..just need "find" a source.

Try Larco in millsap, I don't know if they'll be any cheaper, but they've always done me a good job.

It's not like my a/c unit is an antique either. My house was only built in 2007.

I think he is pulling one over on you. There is no good reason why you should replace your whole unit if it is only 8 years old. The two units in my house are going on 25+ years and still work. Granted, they take that expensive freon now, but I will take that over $10,000 all day long. This happened to my brother too. Not all AC guys are reputable. They want to put in the new units because their margin is higher on those. Get a second opinion

As bad as it is to have to replace it, price sounds about right. We had to replace ours a couple years back and it was around 7k. On a positive note I can keep it really cool now and my light bill is a lot cheaper than it was before. You may be able to get a little more life out of it, but if you can swing getting it replaced right now there are some benefits.

Get ahold of Wayne and Leb at Texas Air and Heating (817) 596-8367
They just replaced my whole unit and they told me to contact insurance company due to possible lightning strike on compressor. I've known Leb for few years but they do good work and Wayne can get you a quote.

My sister has an AC unit that is 12 years old and was low on Freon. Leb just put couple lbs of Freon in and charged them a small service fee and Freon and was on his way. No way 8yrs old is outdated!!

Just replaced my downstairs unit. Upstairs unit 2 years go. I probably could have limped through another month or two with it but figured better now than later in August when it totally quit. Used the same local guy.

American Standard. It is consistently rated as the highest in reliability and satisfaction. Made on the same line as Trane.

Talk to several companies. Get references. Do your due diligence. Sadly HVAC has its share of shysters like any other business. Good luck.

I hate to say it but what the tech told you is true. R22 is becoming obsolete and way more expensive. The reason he recommended to replace the system is that it has a leak. There's no way to tell how severe but it is. I would always let the customer know that they are gonna have to replace the system soon or keep forking 500 bucks for refrigerant and other fees. And 400 to refill the system was a good price.

                          What brand is the unit?

Just find a tech that does sidework.
Under 10 y/o some parts are still under warranty.
The new units are more efficient but less reliable.
The freon is under more pressure and the coils are thinner- this gives them faster heat transfer. However more leaks occur.
You Dont need a whole new unit unless its all rusted out or something goofy

Your coil is probably leaking .
