Just found they are called leaf footed bugs?
Leaf footed bug nymph
The bugs that kill squash plants are a moth that lays an egg and the egg turns into a worm. The worm burrows into the stem and kills the plant. There is also a "squash bug" but they are quite a bit smaller than a leaf footed bug.

A couple years ago in Lufkin I was covered up in these little suckers. Couldn't kill them fast enough, adults, little red nymphs, whatever...they were all over my tomatoes. I'd go out every day and kill them. The next summer, I had several little green lizards move into my garden permanently. Didn't see one single leaf footed bug that summer. It was pretty awesome to see nature correcting and balancing itself.
