    Pronghorn hunting advice?

I got a call from a friend from a buddy the other day. He asked if I wanted to go out to west Texas and go pronhorn hunting. I said heck yeah of course! Im pretty stoked about this hunt, but realize I dont know anything about this hunting. It will be a rifle hunt, and more than likely will bring the 308 instead of the 270 I have.

Anybody have anyexperience with hunting these animals? Thanks in advance

I'd use the 270. Loooong shots are more often than not what antelope hunting is about. Or step it up and bring a pop up and try to get one with a bow. Either way, good luck and keep us posted.

You're lucky. I heard that several counties in west texas had a 50% decline in adult pronghorns this summer, and 1/2 the tags were issued compared to last year. Good luck with it. Where are you hunting?

Its a freaking blast and a half. Look over a lot of country. I have been fortunate to take them with bow and rifle. Like quarterback said, a pop up next to water is fun. Take lots of bullets.

Binoculars are a must, spotting scope is a BIG plus. I would take the 270 over the 308. They aren't hard to spot at long distances with good optics. I spotted several at about 2 miles away with my binos while hunting mule deer. As for the gettting close part, cant help you there.

Take you a pick and shovel and dig you a pit blind. Worked for me-twice.

Try to pick a cloudy night. A Q-beam is visible from too far on a clear night up there.

I've taken two. One was with a 270 at over 400 yards. And one was on a hunt with Uncle Ted in Marfa, taken at 22 yards with my bow. Both hunts were lots of fun.

I hunted near Marfa in 2002...

and the bucks were rutting crazy. They could have cared less about a human. I watched two bucks fighting and they were on opposite sides of the fence! Could have shot mine with a handgun if he'd have come any closer. Anything in the .257, .270, 7mm class is good for them. They aren't hard to kill. Good luck.

I have harvested 2 in New Mexico and 2 in Wyoming with a rifle during the past 5 years. I always used a 270 because shots can be long. Last week I was fortunate enough to harvest one on a "spot and stalk" in Wyoming with a bow. They can see forever, run like crazy, and have a great "sense of smell". Good luck on your hunt......It will be fun!!!!!!
