Where can I find used power strokes?

I can not believe I am writing this and Wdixon and oletomtalker are probably gonna bust out laughing that I am asking for a ford... Well I'm currently driving a '97 half ton Chevy Silverado and I love it but I think it's time for an upgrade because I want something that I can service a little easier and take on long road trips without worries and work on ranches and pull goosenecks and all that fun stuff. Right now I'm just looking but I hope to buy around Christmas, I'm looking for an '08 or newer power stroke, 4wd, and trying to keep it under $20k. My plan is to make an all cash deal with no loans. Where would yall recommend looking? I've been looking on Craigslist pretty often

Cars.com. they also have an app for your smart phone. I was just looking at the old school Powerstrokes for a friend yesterday. Just a suggestion, but if that's the price range you're wanting to stay in, you can find a very nice older Powerstroke with arguably the best engine ever put in a pickup (7.3 liter Powerstroke) in the price range. I bought mine in march and it only had 91k miles and is in excellent shape. It's a very nice truck, maintaining it is very easy and substantially cheaper than the newer trucks. If you'd like to take a look, the year models you'll need to look at are the 1999-2003. Ford changed to the 6.0 liter engine in the middle of 2003. So, you'll find some 7.3 liter diesels and some 6.0 diesels in that year model. The 6.0 had quite a few issues and I'd recommend you steer clear of it. Good luck with your search. Take you time and the right rig will come along. BTW, I got rid of my 2011 half ton truck to go back to a diesel. I specifically set out to get a 7.3 and couldn't be happier. It really is awesome.

Autotrader. Also you can check some of the powerstroke websites to see what they have. I think the problem is your year search though. For an 08 or newer, 20k will get you high mileage. Have you considered a 7.3? For 20k you can get a low mileage gem. Just a thought. I searched Craigslist for months before finding the right one.

With your price range and stipulations I would stay away from ford. I would look hard at dodge probably around 06. It's hard to believe but $20k budget on a diesel is going to be a higher mileage truck. You will find a lot more if you move that to $25,000.

                    Avoid the 6.4 2008-2010

I have found a lot of them around 100k miles for around 15k on Craigslist... What's wrong with the 6.4 and '08 fords? I've never been a ford person so I've never known much about them but I thought after the 6.0 they were all good

Don't fool yourself thinking newer is always better. I'm still driving my 2001 7.3 P/S F250 at 235K miles. I used to pull a 39' toy hauler with it without missing a beat. The only issues I've had were a high pressure oil pump O-ring, new water pump, right ball joint, and servicing the A/C. Buddies with newer Fords, GMs, and Dodges have replaced theirs a few time since I bought mine used in 2003.

It's already pretty much been said but staying away from 6.0 and 6.4 are a pretty good idea. You can find 1 every now and again that's done right and runs well but if either of those are the route you decide on going I'd have a good diesel mechanic look it over. You're most likely option under 20k is gonna be a 7.3. You might be able to find a watered down trim with a 6.7 within your budget.
As far as finding a good one, I'd look at any online car dealers ebay, craigslist, autotrader etc.

                            There was a nice 7.3 F350 in the classifieds. A little over 100k miles $17k. I believe it was a 4x4, 4door.

The 6.4s make a lot of power but the early ones had some problems. The were 3 "jobs" in 08, then 09-10 were the same job 3. Job 1 had radiator issues, job 2 attempted to fix it, and job 3 finally succeeded. If you can find a 2010 or late 09 model with low miles, I wouldn't turn it away. You should look on powerstroke.org and read all of the info in the 6.4 section if you're set on 08 or newer.

That said, my buddy had a job 1 08 as soon as they came out and it was a great truck. He had the radiator replaced under warranty and that's it. Ran it for almost 200k before he sold it.
