Work related, what would you do?

Just got a call from a competing company in the same industry as the current company I'm in to do a referral interview for one of my employees that is leaving.

After the interview over her work history he started asking me about what I do and told me they are looking to hire at their company for sales managers as well and threw me an offer doing the same things I currently do for 5k more annually than what I make now. The only catch is that it's currently a 2 year contract with potential for more work but no guarantee.

I will be emailing him back and forth here shortly for more information on benefits, scheduling, etc. But based solely on what I've stated, what would yall do?

I'm not 100% tied to my current company but I also don't like hopping around to different jobs. I'm leaning towards jumping ship but my decisions will be weighted heavily on what benefits and work schedule they can offer me.

How long have you been with your current job and do you enjoy it?

Don't use ur work email for the correspondence!

Is you current job scheduled for longer than 2 years? What happens when the 2 years is up at the new place and u don't have a job? Will ur industry look down on u for changing jobs?

From my dealings with the job market, my Brother and I call ourselves mercenaries.

It may not be popular, but with most companies only giving out cost of living raises, and smaller percentage bonuses, longevity just doesn't pay anymore.

Make them make you an offer you can't refuse, and then don't refuse it.

There are certain exceptions obviously, but this is just my general take.

There is more to look at with a new job than an extra 5k a year. That money can be negated quick when you start talking insurance, perks, hours, expectations, etc.

5k isn't a substantial raise when you consider the possibility of being out of work in two years. That also depends on your current job security. If it were me, the current job was secure past two years and there are no iffy issues currently, I would stay put.

$5K isnt enough to leave a job i like.

If i dont like a job, then a paycut wouldnt bother me for a job a did like.

YOU have to decide on how much you like what you, where you are doing it, and who you are doing it for.

I am coming up on one year with my current company, benefits are garbage, I actually have private Healthcare at the moment. I get 1.5 days off of paid vacation per month. Other than that my outlook on this company is neutral, some days are okay and some days I want to quit on the spot.

I for sure will be corresponding via personal email haha wouldn't dare do it on my work email.

If you want to show your current employer loyalty inform them of the offer and see if they are willing to counter. It worked for me once. Good Luck!

An extra $420 a mo. is never a bad thing, whether you think its substantial or not.

Thats a nice little toy if you'd want. Or a student loan payment.

Good advice there. I particularly like what i highlighted above.

I doubled my salary in 18 months a few years back by changing companies 3 times. Been with the last company for 4 years now. It seems like to get a decent increase in pay you sometimes have to leave your current employer. Next time I see an offer for 20% more than I'm making now with benefits that are at least close to what i have now, I'm gone, but you've got to weigh all the benefits that come along with it. We've had 3 layoffs in 3 years and I keep making it to the other side, but it gives you an idea of what loyalty the company has to its employees... It's just business for the company, and it's just business for me.

Would like to hear more of your story James....

I agree on the deal you can't refuse... Make them make it WORTH it... otherwise... keep what you got. I'm in a situation that I'm not sure I should have jumped into... but what can you do...

$420 a month is a new truck payment for what I'm looking at... just saying

Well put. I would not make the money I make now if it was not for this reasoning. Business is business.
