    Not Just Another Snake ID

We have a long driveway, and while riding my bike to get the mail, spotted this track going across a couple hundred yards from the house. I would guess pretty big rattler from the distance between loops (1' try square for comparison), and using looping to move instead of belly scales. Thought this might be more interesting than the usual dead rat snake ID.

Doesn't appear to be looping like a sidewinder or similar snake. I think that could probably be any snake over 3ft long, and he is definitely using his belly scales. Take a pic looking down on the track, it would tell more.

Doesn't appear to be a very big snake from the track. a BIG rattler will have a much wider track, more like 5" wide or more. That one doesn't look to be any wider than the ruler in your "tri-square"...

I was wondering why he had a square on his bike to check the mail.
Do you always carry a square with you.

That looks like a 4'-5' coachwip/racer type snake.

That square is probably older than I am, and I am getting pretty rusty, too.

I have caught a few rat snakes in the 5-6 foot range, saw a racer eating a 2' rattler one day a few years back and have killed maybe 50 rattlers up to about 3 1/2' over the 12 years we have had this 15 acre place. Never killed a BIG rattler.

Unless a rattlesnake is in a hurry trying to get away from you they crawl in a pretty straight line.
