cost of a 220 volt line

I have an detached garage about 8ft from the main house and was wondering what would be best have a single 220 outlet put in or a whole panel for the garage and the cost for either thanks ............Coy

IMO, most of the cost is going to be running the line, so you might as well put in a sub-panel and give yourself options for the future.

Put in a panel... If money is an issue, you can get a panel at home depot for less than $100. You may want to add some stuff later...

You might want to make sure you existing panel can handle another circuit first.

I would go the panel route if at all possible.

For sure put in a panel. You can never have to many receptacles in the garage.
If you have a friend that does electrical work it shouldn't cost you much more than material. Maybe a 12 pack or two.

Look in your panel, if you have room for a 220 breaker that's all you need. Install breaker and run wire to plug 8 feet away. Nothing to it.

I got a quote awhile back of 750 for the panel 350 for the receptacle is that about right for material and labor?

You have to make sure your original panel can handle the expected amps of the sub-panel. Example - if you already have 120amps of breakers in a 150amp box, then theoretically you can add a sub-panel up to 30 amps. Anything over 150amp in this example would of course be against the regulations, but could potentially be a safety hazard. Determining the amount of available amperage would make the decision on weather you want one line ran to the garage or a separate sub-panel. If you don't have to replace the main panel for the upgrade, then you will not have to pull the meter, which should make this installation pretty simple.

Sounds high to me if all you are doing is putting a 220 breaker in the original panel, running some conduit, and installing a 220 outlet. A 30 amp 2 pole 220v breaker isn't but about $10.

Most of that is labor and without seeing it, its hard to say what it would cost. The materials are going to run about $200 give or take $50.

I have a couple 220's in my garage for compressor and Welders.
they were all different amperage. Might want to look into that and make sure your not going to fry something.
