Tractor Guru's: Implement sizes for old Massey

I have a Massey Ferguson 65 that has a max PTO hp of 48. I am looking to see get a shredder, disk and some other implements, but I need to know what this tractor can handle.

As for the shredder I wouldn't go bigger than a six footer. Hard to say on a disc but I wouldn't go to big. A tandem six footer should work fine.

Probably don't want to go over six foot for shredder. Maybe stay same on disc size. No offset disc, just simple tandem. May need weights on front.

        Agree with the above comments.

Thanks. I had a buddy of mine tell me it would handle a 7' shredder, but I thought that it was too much.

It may handle that in ideal conditions. But, as we all know, things always end up being less than perfect.

Another thing is to consider the weight of a 7 foot when you attempt to lift it with the 3 point. With no weight on the front, that size of tractor may pop a wheelie. Could even snap wide front off if it slams back down.

That is a good point. I was assuming we were talking about the type shredder that the rear wheels lift it. (That's what we primarily use) If the OP is working with the type that is lifted by the 3-point, weight needs to definitely be addressed.

The size of the shredder will depend on the weight and type of shredder.

I had a 7 foot shredder and a 6 foot shredder. They weighted about the same.

Those old tractor weigh much more than current models.

It shows a Massey 65 weight around 4100 lbs.

I think 6 foot on most implements would work fine.

We have a 7 foot on a 55 HP tractor and we had to add weights on front. But, it handles it awesome.

It would probably handle a 7' to 8' drag style shredder, mowing finer grasses just fine. You get into some thick, heavy stuff, like palmettos......different story.

On the same note, we have a 3pt Rhino 6' shredder, medium duty, and its heavy. You almost need a FEL to help balance the weight. PTO spins it good, mows good, but its dang heavy on a 2wd, 50horse tractor.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about getting rid of my 6' tandem disk and
getting a 8' offset. I had an 8N that pulled the 6' disk good, but I guess I will keep the tandem.

I've got an old Bush Hog brand 6 foot that I bought used from a friend. It was originally set up as a pull type/tongue hitch with two rear wheels and later converted to a three point hitch with one swivel tail wheel. If I put it on a compatible size tractor without front weights, the front definitely gets light when the mower is raised.

What did you do with my favorite Cajun Chef, Justin Wilson?. Sure miss his shows and his humor.

Yep. I miss his humor too. I've got a line a drag type 6' and a 3 pt. 6'. The drag type is cheap, but too far (not fat) for me to get.

Back in the early 1990's had hoped to at least get to meet him or be in the audience of one of his shows. Never got to.

Hope you get a good deal on whichever shredder you end up buying.
